BIBHU MOHAPATRA SS2022 COLLECTION.

“Recently, I read the Insurgent Muse by Terry Wolverton — it sent me on a explorative journey to discover the founders of the Women’s Building, which is like an altar of the feminist art movement.” - Bibhu Mohapatra

When choosing fabrics we always take into account the season, climate change, as well as comfort, flexibility, and ease. The Cady Quilted Skirt with Cropped Top is my signature look from the Spring Summer 2022 collection. The pandemic and the many ways it’s impacted our communities and priorities has made us meditate more deeply on strength, courage, vulnerability, as well as hope and rebirth. And the life and work of these female artists has really personified these attitudes for me and this collection. - Bibhu Mohapatra

The need for change in every step of the usual process of the past was acutely felt — Bibhu became more mindful of the resources and needs of the audience, and adjusted by redefining and re-examining what luxury is and what the future of luxury could be.

The team combed through the designer’s archive from the past 12 years, re-imagining past silhouettes into new garments while finding new ways to highlight and celebrate the artistry of those craftspeople  who have supported the company for years, even through the pandemic.

For the Spring Summer 2022 Collection, Bibhu explores the birth of the infamous Women’s Building in Los Angeles. Formed in 1973 as an act of protest, the Women’s Building offered a safe haven for feminist, lesbian, and bisexual women artists who yearned to create their own space outside the realm of traditional male-dominated art and cultural circles and institutions.

The Spring Summer 2022 collection is rooted in a movement from the late 60’s and early 70’s where feminist artists worldwide set out to re establish the founding pillars of contemporary art.  This movement inspired change, reshaped cultural attitude and transformed gender stereotypes in the arts—and inspired by these artists who helped found the Women’s Building as well as pave the way for contemporary artists, including Ebony G Patterson. This collection strings together the efforts that gave rise to the feminist movement in the art world, which created a critical platform for today's female artists.
